AWA Annual Dinner Meeting

The AWA Annual Dinner Meeting was held on January 21, 2010 at Commander’s Palace.

The AWA was honored to present Judge Fredericka Homberg Wicker with the Michaelle Pitard Wynne Professionalism Award.

Our keynote speaker was Phoebe Ferguson of the Plessy and Ferguson Foundation
(http://www.bayouandme.com/theplessyandfergusonfoundation.org/)

Ms. Ferguson is the great, great granddaughter of John Howard Ferguson, the Defendant in the famous case that created the separate but equal doctrine.  She has joined forces with Mr. Keith Plessy, the great nephew of the Plaintiff, Mr. Homer Plessy to form the Plessy and Ferguson Foundation.  The organization seeks to preserve historic landmarks related to those historic events, outreach to communities on issues of civil rights and educate young people about the case and its place in history.  She had an amazing story to tell!
